'To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.'

At Bickerton Holy Trinity CE Primary school, our aim is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, predominantly French. Learning a second language will offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, key individuals and cultural differences. The intention is that pupils will feel able and encouraged to continue studying languages beyond key stage 2 and ultimately be working towards becoming life-long language learners.
At Bickerton Holy Trinity CE Primary School, we follow the 'Language Angels' French scheme of work which aims to instil a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures. Language Angels aims to equip all pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum that deepens knowledge but also provides the cultural experiences they need to flourish throughout primary phase and beyond. Through our scheme of work, we aim to give pupils a foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills to other languages, facilitates further language study and opens future opportunities to study and work abroad.
We support pupils to meet the National curriculum end of Key stage 2 attainment targets. The lessons are carefully planned and sequenced to teach the three pillars of a language system; phonics, vocabulary and grammar. The four key language learning skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across key stage 2. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning.
